How Would You Respond? (continued)

You:

Okay, let's talk about your expenses.

Vance:

Well, it cost us about $8,000 to move our things, you know — our furniture, cars and personal belongings. And the travel costs before our move were pretty expensive. My wife had to come out early to find us an apartment to rent, and her plane ticket was about $500.

You:

Okay, that's about $8,500 in expenses so far. Did you have any additional expenses?

Vance:

Yes, when we moved, we drove all the way out to San Diego from North Carolina.

You:

Do you have a record of how many miles you drove?

Vance:

Yes, I have all my records. I've got my gas receipts, moving van receipts, my wife's plane ticket, hotel receipts, everything.

You:

Great, and about how many miles would you say you drove?

Vance:

It was about 3,000 miles. I spent about $500.

You:

At the standard mileage rate, that works out to be about $630 for your moving expenses.

Vance:

And we also spent a lot of money on meals for our trip out here, about $300. And we spent about $250 in hotel bills for two nights.
