  1. The taxable amount, if any, of a taxpayer's Social Security benefits depends upon filing status and other reportable income.
  2. Generally if Social Security benefits are the only source of income, then the benefits are not taxable.
  3. Tier 1 railroad retirement benefits are not treated like Social Security equivalent benefits.
  4. If a taxpayer is filing a joint return and one spouse receives Social Security benefits and the other spouse does not, the spouse's other income does not need to be included in the tax return.
  5. The taxable portion of Social Security benefits is never more than 85% of the net benefits the taxpayer received.
