- Residents of Puerto Rico use these forms to report self-employment
income earned in Puerto Rico and to compute the self-employment
tax due:
- Form 1040-SS (English) or Form 1040-SS (SP) (Spanish) if they don't have income subject to U.S. tax
- Form 1040, Schedules C and SE, if they have income subject to U.S. tax
- Caution: Do not file a Form 1040-SS (English or Spanish) and a Form 1040 for the same taxpayer on the same tax year.
- Taxpayers generally have to make estimated tax payments if they expect to owe $1,000 or more when they file their return; otherwise, they may get a penalty for underpayment of estimated tax
